Fall Show Review

St. Luke’s House Southport Center hosted the Studio In-Sight’s first Fall Annual show on November first with tremendous results. The show featured ten of the working artists that participate regularly in St. Luke’s House arts programming. Many of the artists were in attendance at the show to talk to visitors about their work as well as to socialize and enjoy some light snacking.

Preparation for a big show like this takes many months of hard work from the artists and curators. Painter Rosetta Nesbitt was working on her pieces up till well over the end of Friday studio class to get all of her work into the show. Several other artists put in extra time during the preceding weeks at home and in the offices of St. Luke’s, adding last minute touch ups and flourishes. Life Skills Program Director Elaine and I worked down to the wire to finish the art selection, advertizing, framing, pricing, art tags, and clean-up (so many other things, but those are the main items) involved in hosting a grand art opening. Much credit has to be distributed between the group of staff, interns and volunteers that put in the extra time and passion to makes a show of this stature come together so well.

Featured in the show were several different artists’ series such as Vicki Perraut’s multi hued circles and squares paintings. Paul Spratlin exhibited five vastly different paintings and drawings of “Electromagnetic Field Diagrams” from his self described physics based style. Included in the varied images on display were a bright red acrylic praying mantis, delicate watercolor African violets, two African busts in oils, and many others. As well, several works on paper were included that were framed in-house. This framing is part of an enhancement to Studio In-Sight’s exhibition abilities and professional development.

The day of the show saw the staff fighting the clock to make the reception deadline, but we had much unexpected assistance from several clients who helped making signs and cleaning the art space. Turnout was light but steady throughout the afternoon and included many family and friends of the artists. Out of a total of 40 pieces that were on sale, the clients sold eleven. Also sold at the show were our first ever calendars that are accessible through cafepress.com. A laptop was made available alongside the brand new calendars so that visitors could order their very own vibrant calendar on the spot. For the clients and the program it was a great day!
